Injuries. Our ultimate goal, every day

Our Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) programs are designed to protect our people, our partners and our communities while empowering every employee to take ownership of safety. From project planning and daily operations to leadership accountability and employee engagement, safety is integrated into every aspect of our business.

More than 20 dedicated HSE professionals support our teams across the company, providing guidance, training, oversight and continuous improvement initiatives. This level of investment is uncommon in our industry and reflects our commitment to creating safer workplaces and stronger project outcomes.

Industry-Leading Safety Performance

RK’s safety culture is recognized nationally through some of the industry’s most respected certifications and awards. We’re proud to be:

  • An OSHA Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Star Mobile Workforce.
  • One of only 66 companies nationwide to earn OSHA VPP Star Mobile Workforce status.
  • Among just 0.02% of U.S. companies to hold OSHA VPP certification at any level.

These achievements reflect a disciplined approach to planning, engaged leadership and craft professionals who take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of those around them.

RK is also a consistent recipient of the National Health and Safety Excellence Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Rocky Mountain Chapter, recognizing our commitment to safety performance and continuous improvement.

While we’re proud of these accomplishments, our focus remains on raising the standard and finding new ways to protect our workforce every day.

Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility

Creating a safe workplace requires participation from every team member. RK encourages employees to actively prevent incidents by:

  • Reporting unsafe conditions.
  • Following approved work practices.
  • Maintaining clean and organized work areas.
  • Using proper personal protective equipment.
  • Identifying opportunities for improvement.

Beyond daily responsibilities, employees are encouraged to participate in safety committees, inspections, audits and process improvement initiatives. The strongest safety cultures are built when everyone has a voice and every concern is addressed.

Stop Work Authority

Every RK employee has both the right and the responsibility to stop work when a task appears unsafe. Whether it’s unclear instructions, changing site conditions, improper equipment, an unexpected hazard or a procedure that doesn’t seem right, employees are empowered to pause work and speak up.

Stopping work isn’t about delaying progress. It’s about protecting people. Once concerns are identified, teams work together to assess the situation, resolve hazards and ensure work can continue safely. This commitment reinforces a culture where every employee has the authority to make safety decisions in real time.

Great Catch Program

Safety awareness starts with recognizing and addressing hazards before incidents occur. RK’s Great Catch Program encourages employees to identify potential risks, unsafe conditions and opportunities for improvement before someone gets hurt. Through recognition and incentive programs, employees are celebrated for proactively contributing to safer jobsites and workplaces.

The program reinforces personal accountability while strengthening a culture where employees actively look out for one another. By recognizing positive safety actions, Great Catch helps transform safety from a requirement into a shared responsibility embraced across the organization.

Daily Safety Practices

Safety is reinforced every day through consistent communication, planning and preparation. Across RK projects and facilities, teams participate in:

  • Daily safety meetings
  • Pre-task planning
  • Job hazard analysis reviews
  • Stretch and flex routines
  • Ongoing safety training and education

These practices help employees identify risks early, prepare for changing conditions and reduce the likelihood of injuries before work begins.

Mental Wellness Is Part of Safety

Protecting employees extends beyond physical safety. Stress, fatigue, mental health challenges and personal hardships can affect focus, decision-making and overall well-being both on and off the job. That’s why RK approaches safety through a holistic lens that includes physical, mental and emotional health.

Employees and their families have access to confidential support through RK’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP). We also continue to lead the industry through investments in VitalCog suicide prevention training, helping employees recognize warning signs, start meaningful conversations and connect people with support when it’s needed most. A safer workplace starts with supporting the whole person.

Technology That Supports Safer Operations

RK continually invests in tools and technology that help reduce risk and improve safety performance. Roadway safety is one of the most significant risks employees face each day. That’s why RK equips its fleet with Samsara vehicle safety systems that provide real-time visibility into driving conditions and roadway events.

These tools help identify potential hazards, support defensive driving practices and create coaching opportunities that strengthen safe driving behaviors. They also provide valuable documentation when employees encounter unsafe actions from other motorists, helping protect both our drivers and the public.

Continuous Improvement

Safety excellence is never finished. RK’s HSE programs are built on continuous evaluation, learning and improvement. By combining employee engagement, leadership accountability, advanced training, technology and industry-leading practices, we continue working toward our ultimate goal of zero injuries.

Every decision, every project and every day begins with protecting the people who make our success possible.
